Respite Care — Carers Need Breaks Too

What respite care is, how it works, and who it helps — giving family carers the break they deserve

What is Respite Care?

What is Respite Care?
Respite care provides temporary substitute care for family carers, giving them time to rest, attend to personal matters, or travel — while ensuring their loved one continues to receive professional, safe, and compassionate care. Duration is flexible — from a few hours or overnight to several weeks — and can be arranged at home, in the community, or in a care setting. Available for NDIS participants and aged care clients.
How is respite care different from regular care?
Regular care is ongoing, long-term support. Respite care is temporary, short-term cover. It can supplement your existing arrangements — when your regular carer is on leave, when you need to travel for a few days, or when you just need a breather. SDC Happy Health provides the same professional care, just for shorter, more flexible periods.

Who is it For?

Who needs respite care?
Respite care serves two groups: (1) Family carers — people caring for loved ones who need a break. Carer health matters too, and respite helps prevent burnout. (2) Care recipients — NDIS participants (under 65 with disability) or aged care clients (65+, with HCP or CHSP) who need temporary care while their regular carer rests.
What are common scenarios for respite care?
Common situations: (1) Carer needs a holiday or is travelling; (2) Carer is sick or has medical appointments; (3) Urgent home matters (moving, renovations, emergencies); (4) Carer needs to handle personal errands (banking, legal matters); (5) Carer just needs a day off — this isn't a luxury, it's essential self-care.

Funding & Costs

Can NDIS funding cover respite care?
Yes. For NDIS participants, respite often uses Short Term Accommodation (STA) funding from your Core budget, or community participation funding. If your plan includes STA, it can cover respite. Some flexible funding can also be used for in-home respite. Check with your Support Coordinator about available budget in your plan.
How do aged care clients pay for respite?
For HCP / Support at Home clients: respite can be covered using flexible portions of your care funding. Under the new Support at Home system, respite sits in the everyday living category — some government-funded, some may require co-payment. CHSP clients can also access short-term respite. Contact us and we'll help you sort out the funding.

Carers Deserve Rest Too

Caring for a family member is one of the most meaningful things a person can do. It is also one of the most demanding. Respite care gives family carers the space to rest, recharge, and attend to their own wellbeing — while knowing their loved one is in safe, professional hands.

SDC Happy Health provides flexible respite support for NDIS participants and aged care clients across Sydney. Whether you need a few hours of cover each week, overnight support, or short-term residential care for a longer break, we will work around your schedule and your family's needs.
