Independent Living Starts Here — Understanding SIL

Everything you need to know about Supported Independent Living (SIL) — from eligibility and funding to daily life in a shared home

What is SIL?

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
SIL is an NDIS-funded housing support model that provides 24/7 in-home support for people with disabilities who share a home — typically 2 to 7 participants. Support workers help with daily living tasks (personal care, meals, medication, housekeeping) while encouraging residents to build their independence. At SDC Happy Health, our SIL homes are in North Rocks, Sydney, offering a warm, house-style environment with bilingual staff.
How is SIL different from regular renting or sharing?
SIL is not just shared housing — it's living with professional support. Key differences: (1) 24/7 trained support workers on-site; (2) support and care costs covered by NDIS funding; (3) tailored support based on each participant's goals and NDIS plan; (4) focus on skill development to build independence over time.

Eligibility & Funding

Who is eligible for SIL?
SIL is available to NDIS participants whose plan specifically includes funding for Supported Independent Living. It's typically for people with higher daily support needs. SIL funding covers support workers — it does NOT cover rent, utilities, or food (those are paid by the participant, possibly with Rent Assistance or Centrelink payments). If your plan doesn't include SIL, talk to your Support Coordinator about requesting it at your next plan review.
How is SIL funding managed?
SIL funding is typically managed by an NDIS registered provider. Depending on your plan management: (1) NDIA-managed (provider claims directly); (2) Plan-managed (a plan manager handles it); (3) Self-managed (you handle billing). Ask providers for a clear breakdown of support hours, rates, and services.

Daily Life

What's daily life like in a SIL home?
Every SIL home has its own vibe, but generally: mornings with help getting up and ready; shared meal times; daytime activities based on each person's NDIS plan (work, training, social, therapy); evenings together cooking, relaxing; overnight support available. Each resident has their own room and privacy is respected. Staff respect each person's choices, routines, and cultural background.
Can I choose my housemates?
When you move in, SDC Happy Health considers your personality, needs, and preferences to find a good match. If it's not working out, you can request a change. The goal is for everyone to feel comfortable and safe. Visit the home and meet the current residents to see if it's a good fit.

Costs & Housing

What costs do I pay on top of SIL?
SIL covers support only. You'll pay: (1) rent (market rate or income-based share); (2) utilities (shared); (3) food and groceries; (4) personal expenses (entertainment, shopping). If on DSP from Centrelink, you may qualify for Rent Assistance. Some participants can also apply for NDIS STA or MTA funding.
Where are the SIL homes located? Can I visit?
SDC Happy Health's SIL homes are in North Rocks, Sydney — close to shops, public transport, and community facilities. We warmly welcome potential residents and families to visit. Call 1800 HAPPY11800 427 791 to arrange a tour.

Choosing a Provider

How do I choose a SIL provider?
Consider: (1) Chinese/bilingual support available; (2) home location and environment; (3) quality of 24/7 support and staff training; (4) transparent fees; (5) respect for participant choice and autonomy; (6) cultural suitability — understanding of different cultural backgrounds, dietary needs, festivals, and language preferences. Our team speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and English.
Can I switch providers or move out?
Yes. Your NDIS plan gives you the right to choose your provider. If you're not satisfied, you can switch. If your needs change (e.g., moving back with family or to another type of housing), you can request a change. Talk to your new provider before switching to ensure a smooth transition.

How SIL Funding Works

SIL is funded through your NDIS plan under the Supported Independent Living budget. This is separate from your other NDIS supports and is assessed based on your individual needs and the level of supervision required.

Our team can help you understand your SIL funding, liaise with your NDIS planner, and guide you through the process of moving into one of our homes. We speak Mandarin and Cantonese, so nothing gets lost in translation.

"Independence doesn't mean being alone. It means having the right support to live life on your own terms — in a place that truly feels like home."
